Social and Emotional Learning at St Alban's
At St Alban's we recognise and understand the importance of nurturing not only academic growth but also the emotional well-being of our children. We create a supportive environment where children can develop the skills they need to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Zones of Regulation
In adopting the Zones of Regulation as a whole-school approach, we create a consistent, supportive environment across school. Teachers and staff integrate the Zones language and strategies into daily routines, lessons, and activities. Children use simple, practical tools, such as breathing exercises, visual reminders, and self-reflection practices, to navigate their emotions effectively.
We have designated areas throughout school, these stations are designed to be accessible, empowering children to independently engage with activities that help them reset, refocus, and return to learning.

Emotional Literacy Support
To help navigate emotional challenges, we offer emotional literacy support both 121 and in small group sessions.
Emotional Literacy sessions are led by experienced staff who work closely with children to develop their understanding of emotions, enhance self-esteem, and build resilience. These sessions provide a safe, nurturing space for children to express themselves and work through any challenges they may face.

Drawing and Talking Therapy
We also offer Drawing and Talking Therapy, a therapeutic approach that uses drawing as a means for children to express and process their thoughts and feelings. This gentle, child-centered therapy encourages our children to communicate through art, helping them to articulate emotions that may be difficult to verbalise. By offering this therapy it allows our children to reflect on their feelings and provides them with lifelong coping skills.
Sand Play Therapy
One of our valuable resources for fostering emotional literacy and self-expression is sand play therapy.
Sand Play Therapy uses a sandbox and a variety of miniature figures to help children express thoughts and feelings in a non-verbal, symbolic way. Children can build scenes that represent their inner world, helping them work through complex emotions or challenges that may be difficult to articulate with words alone. Sand Play provides a unique opportunity for children to reflect on their thoughts, gain new insights, and develop greater self-awareness.
Our SEL program, including Emotional Literacy Sessions ,Drawing and Talking Therapy and Sand Play is in place to empower our children with the tools they need for emotional health and success. Together, we strive to create a school environment that values and supports the whole child.

Caritas, meaning “love and compassion,” reflects our approach to counselling and reinforces our values of empathy, respect, and understanding.
Caritas Counselling is woven into the fabric of our school community, reinforcing our commitment to creating a nurturing environment where everyone feels valued and supported. We encourage children, families and staff to view counselling as a positive resource.
We want to empower our children to become well-rounded, emotionally intelligent individuals prepared for a bright future.
At St Alban's Caritas Counselling is more than a service—it is a commitment to the growth, resilience, and lifelong well-being for all.
Our school counsellor is in school once a week to offer support.

We believe that strong, positive relationships are the foundation of a successful learning environment. As part of our commitment to creating a respectful and supportive community, we have embraced a Restorative Practice approach. This approach focuses on fostering healthy relationships, promoting accountability, and resolving conflicts in a constructive, empathetic manner.
Restorative Practice seeks to address the root cause, repair harm, and restore relationships. By actively involving our children, staff, and families in the process, we work together to create a culture where every voice is heard, valued, and respected.
