At St Alban’s we aim to ensure our children are confident, expressive speakers and thoughtful, considerate listeners with a deep understanding of conversation, performance and appropriate registers and the ability to communicate fluently in standard English.
We offer a progressive communication curriculum in order for our children in all groups to make accelerated progress to achieve National Expectations or above. For those who have communication issues, we identify these early and our children take part in speech and language interventions to rapidly close the gap. Our school 'Talk Values' remind children of the rules for talk and sentence stems in every classroom are used to encourage full sentence use. Our children have a weekly assembly covering current world issues and a 'tweet time' session where they can share their opinions and discuss which is also discussed in the dinner hall at lunchtimes. Further to this, we are beginning an exciting debate club to nurture the budding spokespeople of the future!
We encourage oracy in all of our lessons, using talk partners, group work and a variety of talk structures to engage children in talk so that this builds up to performances. We practice retelling stories and dramatising our learning throughout school so that our communication culture is strong. Our Grand Finales for our Adventures in Learning creates a language and oracy rich environment where children can present to their loved ones about their learning and showcase their knowledge and understanding. As a Catholic School, our children present masses, weekly celebration of the word and partake in theatrical performances of the nativity and the Easter story with reverence.
Come and talk to our children - they certainly would love to talk to you!
