Working like scientists
Here at St Albans, our intent for the Science curriculum is to cultivate a deep and lasting understanding of scientific principles among our pupils. We aim to inspire curiosity and a passion for discovery by providing a comprehensive and engaging curriculum that:
Promotes Scientific Literacy: Our intent is to ensure that each child develops the skills and knowledge required to understand and engage with the world scientifically. This includes the ability to ask questions, formulate hypotheses, conduct investigations, and critically evaluate findings.
Encourages Skill Development: We strive to develop not only knowledge but also practical skills. Pupils are encouraged to use scientific methods and processes, including observation, experimentation, and data analysis, to become proficient in handling scientific inquiries.
Is Inclusive and Relevant: Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and to cater to the diverse needs and interests of all pupils. We emphasise the relevance of science to everyday life and aim to make connections to local contexts, ensuring that every child can see the value and application of their learning.
Fosters a Growth Mindset: We promote a culture where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process. Throughout our Science lessons, pupils are encouraged to take risks, learn from their experiences, and develop resilience, which contributes positively to their overall educational journey.
Our Science curriculum is delivered through a carefully structured approach that supports effective learning experiences for all pupils.
Thematic Units: Science is taught through thematic units that incorporate cross-curricular links with subjects such as mathematics, geography, and art. This integrated approach helps reinforce and contextualise scientific knowledge, making learning more meaningful.
Hands-On Investigations: We prioritise practical, hands-on investigations where pupils can explore scientific concepts actively. This includes using equipment and resources.
Progressive Skills Development: Each year, pupils build upon prior knowledge and skills in a sequenced manner, ensuring progression through the National Curriculum. Teachers regularly assess and track pupil progress, allowing for timely interventions and targeted support where necessary.
