At St. Alban's the main aim of the Music Curriculum is to ensure a universal provision of music education, for all pupils, offering a rich and varied musical framework that nurtures fundamental musical techniques alongside building musical knowledge, all within the statutory of the DfE Music Curriculum.
We have a rich and strong tradition of hymn singing and embracing different kinds of religious music, as well as embracing more popular music that pupils hear all around them and which connects them to each other and to our ever-changing world. As part of the curriculum, children will be introduced to genres of music which they may not necessarily hear at home as well as celebrate music which may be familiar to them from their own cultural traditions. We believe that music should be creative, collaborative, celebratory, as well as challenging. The sheer joy of music appreciation and music making however can enrich each pupil.
The Music Curriculum sets out sequences of learning in the following key areas which, when taken together, all contribute towards the steadily increasing development of musicianship:
Singing
Listening
Composing
Performing/Instrumental performance
The above skills may be expressed instrumentally, vocally or through music technology.
In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, sequences of lessons are planned in line with the Model Music Curriculum.
Year 4 children are taught to learn an instrument through weekly lessons with an external music specialist from Doncaster Music Hub.
The other year groups in Key Stage 2 also have weekly music lessons delivered by an external music specialist, following the Diocese of Hallam Schools’ Singing Programme. These lessons cover content from the Model Music Curriculum, which is delivered through singing, including hymns and worship music that underpin our Catholic Faith.

Young Voices
At St. Alban's, we celebrate our love of singing by taking a choir to Sheffield Arena for the Young Voices concert. This is an amazing opportunity for Key Stage 2 children to be part of a huge choir and singing to an audience of thousands! Our choir is made up of children from across Key Stage 2 who come together to rehearse during lunchtimes.
