At St. Alban’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery, children begin to develop their geographical awareness in Nursery and Reception by exploring the natural world around them, making observations about their local area, making comparisons between their life and life in other countries and drawing information on simple maps. The Essentials Curriculum then allows children to build on this knowledge in KS1 and KS2 and places a focus on children developing and mastering the following skills:

  • to investigate places

  • to investigate patterns

  • to communicate geographically

Geography is taught both discretely and through an ‘adventure in learning’ approach which enables children to produce a final product that encompasses their learning across that topic.
